Acad. Tsvetan Tsvetkov was born in 1943 in the village of Stubel, Mikhailovgrad district.

He holds a post-graduate degree from Saint Petersburg’s University of Cryogenics.

In 1973, he founded the Central Laboratory of Cryobiology and Freeze-drying. Later, it was transformed into an institute and he became its director until 2008.

He specialized at the University of Cambridge, Great Britain; the Transplantation Laboratory of the American Red Cross, the U.S.A. and the Institute of Nutrition and Food, Karlsruhe, Germany.

Acad. Tsvetan Tsvetkov is a pioneer in the field of cryobiology, who has created original biopreparations for the medical practice.

He has participated in the development of specialized food rations for contingents, operating in extreme environments such as space and submarine crews, etc.

His studies appeared in 302 scientific works, including 11 monographs, 14 textbooks, reference materials and brochures, 55 inventor’s certificates, innovations and patents.

He was a visiting professor at the University of Food Technologies in Plovdiv and the Faculty of Biology at the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia.

He has been awarded the order of Cyril and Methodius and the order of Stara Planina.

He was the President of the National Center of Agricultural Sciences (presently the Agricultural Academy) and Editor-in-Chief of Bulgarian Journal of Agricultural Science in 2000 – 2006.

Acad. Tsvetan Tsvetkov is a member of the International Institute for Cold in Paris-France, International Society for Cryobiology – USA, American Association of Tissue Banks, International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Japanese Society for Low Temperature Biology and Medicine, International Lyophilization Society, Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
