The climate goals that the Schwarz Group joined in August 2020 on behalf of all its divisions, including Lidl, have already been officially confirmed by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, a global standard for corporate action in the low-carbon economy.

The Schwarz Group has set itself the goal of reducing its operating emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 2019. In this way, the entire Schwarz Group is taking a major step towards limiting global warming to 1,5 degrees Celsius, in in line with the purpose of the Paris Climate Agreement.

As one of the largest food retailers and part of the Schwarz Group, Lidl is committed to its own climate goals, which are based on the SBTi methodology and contribute to the achievement of the goals set for the entire group. The company’s climate strategy includes ambitious measures in three main areas - avoiding, reducing and compensating for emissions in the company’s stores and supply chains to make a positive contribution to climate protection.

The list of goals that Lidl sets for itself globally and locally includes:

  • Reduction of operating emissions in all Lidl countries by a total of 80% by 2030, compared to 2019;
  • Lidl Bulgaria supports this measure, aiming to reduce its operating carbon emissions by 95% by 2030, compared to 2019;
  • Lidl Bulgaria intends to switch entirely to green energy from March 2022 in all its stores, logistics centers and administrative buildings (Transition to 100% green energy from 01.03.2022 in all Lidl stores, logistics centers and administrative buildings in all countries).
  • Achieving carbon neutrality globally by 2022 in terms of operational emissions (Achieve carbon neutrality through certified operational emission compensation projects (Scope 1 & 2), which have not yet been completely eliminated or reduced).
  • As most of Lidl's carbon footprint is due to product manufacturing, the company also aims to set 75% of suppliers responsible for carbon emissions in the international supply chain by 2026, to determine own climate goals to be in line with Science Based Targets and to contribute to the overall goals of the company.
