BusinessEurope has today called for a comprehensive approach to increasing women’s economic activity across Europe, which focuses on both employees and entrepreneurs. BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer said:

“By 2100, the EU’s working-age population is expected to decline by nearly 50 million, adding to the pressure on our economic and social systems. Women hold the highest potential for addressing this stark challenge, with the opportunity to bring 17.3 million more people into Europe’s active workforce by 2030.

This is why BusinessEurope advocates for a comprehensive approach to increasing women’s economic participation. Key measures include removing disincentives in taxation and social protection systems and improving Europe’s childcare infrastructure. It is also crucial to enhance support for women to develop high-demand skills in areas like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Moreover, the EU’s post-2025 Gender Equality Strategy must leverage emerging opportunities to advance women’s entrepreneurship and career progression.

Gender stereotypes remain a significant barrier to gender equality, influencing educational and career choices by directing individuals toward professions deemed ‘appropriate’ for their gender. Ahead of International Women’s Day, we must commit to embracing this year’s call to ‘Accelerate Action’ on breaking down these barriers.”
