SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE E-COMMERCE
The European Commission today published its strategy to address the challenges posed by e-commerce platforms by promoting fair trading practices and compliance with EU law. Manufacturers of household appliances are strongly affected by unfair practices used by online traders and support ensuring safe and sustainable e-commerce.
EU manufacturers comply with strict safety and environmental standards, while traders from third countries often circumvent them, putting European businesses at a disadvantage. Strong, effective measures are therefore needed to combat unfair competition that undermines the competitiveness of European businesses.
Our action plan for EU policymakers:
Strengthen accountability and enforcement in the market: online platforms should be recognised as economic operators under EU law
Ensure a fair contribution to the management of waste from electrical and electronic equipment: online traders should be legally obliged to take on the obligations of a 'producer' under the WEEE Directive
Create a level playing field for sustainable products: sustainable product requirements should be applied fairly and consistently across the EU market, both online and offline.
