In light of the historical political deal reached by EU co-legislators on the AI Act, Director General of BusinessEurope Markus J. Beyrer said:

“The potential lack of legal certainty is a concern for companies and may hamper AI investments in Europe, hurting our global competitiveness.

We need a rulebook on AI, and a political deal on the AI Act is a positive step. However, the devil will lie in the details. It is worrying that the deal on such a complex piece of legislation was rushed. As a result, there are still many open questions, and the markets will remain confused with the outcome.

We hope additional guidelines and secondary legislative actions will provide a clearer direction. Both industry and society expect the highest quality legislation possible, and the true impact of the AI Act will be measured over time, as was the case with GDPR legislation. The potential lack of legal certainty and additional time to achieve it may hamper investments in AI in Europe, which must be avoided at all costs."
