Only 20% of young people in Bulgaria are currently working. At the same time, 87% of them are willing to study and work at the same time under flexible employment conditions or during weekends. This shows results from a national representative survey conducted in December last year by Gemius Bulgaria, commissioned by TELUS International Europe, among young people and parents. The survey involved young people between the ages of 16 and 19 from the six largest cities in the country.

Main motivation – payment

Nearly 90% of young people think it is important to practice what they have learned during their education. At the same time, 41% of respondents agree that the first job is usually in the service sphere, low paid and unpretentious, and does not contribute to the development of special skills.

The main motivation for starting work is pay (66%), followed by gaining experience (12%) and acquiring work habits (10%). Over 62% of youngsters present their first job in the service sector as a bartender and a waiter. Hotels and restaurants are the most popular and among young people who already have a work experience (41%).

Over 75% of respondents said they were unaware of job opportunities in the outsourcing industry. The main source of information on vacancies is the Internet, reported “Gemius Bulgaria”.

Parents’ point of view

Parents (41%) also believe that pay is the leading factor for young people in choosing a job, according to the survey. Eighty-four percent of respondents believe that their children can simultaneously study and work, and 82 percent would support such a decision

Fears in adults who reject the possibility of simultaneous learning and flexible shift work are related to the loss of training focus, poor working hours and low-paid jobs.
