SUBJECT: THE "GREEN CORRIDORS" IN TRADE CHAINS

DEAR PROF. DR. ANGELOV,

We hereby express our support for the proposal of the Association for Modern Trade (member of BIA), uniting 12 of the largest retail chains in the country, to eliminate the so-called "Green corridors", which are foreseen for the citizens over 65 years.

We share the view that the measure is not working, it does not lead to real benefits for the older customers, and at the same time, creates conditions for the accumulation of citizens of all ages in and in front of the retail chains, which leads to additional risks to their health, incl. for the health of the people over 65 years of age.

The measure makes it difficult for shift workers, working pensioners (over the age of 65), parents of school-age children and, last but not least, those working in retail chains, who often find it difficult to determine the age of one or another person, as they do not have the legal right to require an identity document.

Apart from creating conflict situations and difficulties, the measure does not in any way help to ensure a safe shopping environment for elderly customers, who by definition shop during the inactive (uncluttered) hours of the day.

Retailers are investing heavily to ensure a safe environment for both their customers and their teams - for regular disinfection, for safety equipment, for plexiglass barriers, for information materials, etc. The preventive measures applied against COVID-19 should ensure safe shopping for all consumers, regardless of their age or the time they choose to shop.

WITH RESPECT,
