The rising price of electricity for companies is the motive for the protest demonstration starting in Sofia, organized by trade unions and employers’ organizations. They call for urgent measures to compensate the state for business and social consumers.
The protest is already gathering many disgruntled protesters - owners of smaller family businesses and larger businesses, who are already paying twice and three times more for electricity than in the same period last year.
Today, the price at which electricity is traded on the free market has reached a new record - 480 leva per megawatt-hour and this affects not only businesses but also social structures such as hospitals, schools and kindergartens, which also buy on the free market. This price shock will consume BGN 3 billion and will lead the economy to collapse, warned Vasil Velev from the Association of Industrial Capital:
“People’s patience is exhausted. We want to say this from the square. We have invited everyone who does not want and cannot pay double and triple bills, because the energy dragon comes and collects the results of their work.”
Protesters have prepared a package of urgent measures that will propose to the government to tackle the energy price crisis. The protest has already begun.
