Certain professions pose a risk to employees’ mental health, Tomcho Tomov from BIA shared during the TV show "Business Start" on Bulgaria ON Air

"The trends for the spread of emotional burnout (" burnout ") in Bulgaria are not very positive. At this stage, occupations in which physical contact predominates were studied, and the data show that almost every third of the respondents is affected to one degree or another by burnout. At this rate and this stress, probably in 10 years every second Bulgarian practicing such a profession will be subjected to emotional burnout. " Tomcho Tomov, head of the National Center for Competence Assessment at the Bulgarian Industrial Association commented on Bloomberg TV.

The “burnout” diagnosis is very difficult to pin down early and usually becomes noticeable in its more advanced stages, during which the ones suffering from it already need therapy and / or medication. Signs of emotional burnout evolve from reluctance to meet other people, emotional self-isolation, high fatigue from personal contacts and withdrawal from one's own interests and irritability in relationships ", stated the expert.

"Burnout gradually begins to reduce the productivity and efficiency of the affected person - it devastates you mentally, you start feeling apathetic and reluctant," Tomov added.

According to the head of the National Center for Competence Assessment at the Bulgarian Industrial Association, although burnout is not classified as a WHO disease, some Scandinavian countries and the United Kingdom have given it a similar label, in order to be able to take timely precautionary measures and prescribe the necessary medication at an earlier stage.
