The European Commission has adopted a Communication on the Future of Food and Agriculture, which provides for simplified rules and a flexible approach to real results and the sustainable development of agriculture in Europe.

The main idea is for Member States to take greater responsibility for how and where to invest under the Common Agricultural Policy. It must achieve the ambitious common objectives in regard to the environment, climate change and sustainable development. Each EU country will develop its own strategic plan - approved by the Commission - setting out its intentions for achieving the objectives. Support for farmers will continue through the direct payments system.

Before the summer of 2018 the Commission will present the proposals for legislative actions for achieving the outlined objectives.
