Today Bulgarians will stop working for the government and will start working for themselves. This is a symbolic date and it shows when the state treasury will be full, if everything worked out is immediately seized. Figuratively speaking, this is Tax Freedom Day.

In Bulgaria this day is traditionally in May, but in the past three or four years it comes earlier, because of the lower revenues after the record 2008 figures and a budget deficit.

The days between 20 and 25 April is the time when taxpayers should work additionally for the state in order to cover the 2012 deficit, according to the calculations of the Institute for Market Economics.

In 2012 Bulgarians will work out an average of BGN 223 million on one calendar day. The sum is estimated on the basis of the predicted GDP envisaged in the 2012 national budget.
