Sofia. Due to Belene nuclear power plant project nobody dared to invest in the northern cities of Svishtov, Belene, Nikopol and Levski. It is quite normal for us to ask for compensation for what we were deprived of, Ganka Spasova with the Committee for Ecological and Economic Protection of Svishtov tells Bulgarian ON AIR television.

The committee, which was set up in 1990, wants the site of Belene NPP to be used in best possible way. The murky promise about a steam and gas power plant does not suit it. According to the committee members an industrial park should be built on the Belene site.

The area has the necessary infrastructure – three ports, a liman for heavy cargo, a railway connection and with some reasonable investments a high-speed road and a bridge over the Danube River could be constructed. The committee thinks potential investors from China, India, Persian Gulf countries, Western Europe and Russia could eye the project.
