Many construction workers from the towns of Pernik and Botevgrad have returned home

In a month alone, the economic and financial crisis has forced 23,000 jobless people out of Sofia, trade unions said.

“The traffic rate in the city has decreased by over 20,000 cars,” road police added. Many construction workers have come back to the towns of Pernik and Botevgrad as many construction sites in Sofia have been frozen. Managers have undertaken massive layoffs and pay cuts.

“Our payments are too low to sustain a living here,” construction workers complain.

Representatives of the trade unions have estimated that 700 people lose their job in Sofia everyday. Many small business owners have also been forced to close.
