There will be no Global Climate Agreement before 2012. The contradictions among the separate countries are so great that no Global Climate Agreement could be arrived at before 2012, maintains the EU’s Climate Action Commissioner, Connie Hedegaard.

During the meeting of the European Foreign Affairs Ministers on Monday (22 February 2010) Hedegaard warned that most probably we could not hope to achieve more before the Cop 17 meeting in the Republic of South Africa in December 2011.

The meeting is considered a continuation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, specifies EUobserver. The EU’s Climate Action Commissioner points out that the major reason for her opinion is the fact that the Republic of South Africa will host the meeting and South Africa is one of the biggest developing economies which opposes the richer countries with regard to the provisions of the Global Climate Agreement. This is the reason why Ms Hedegaard is willing to direct the EU strategy on the subject to a solution in nearly two years.
