Bulgaria needs to invest about 1.1 billion leva in the country's energy transmission system by 2020 should the state decide to move on with the construction of the Belene nuclear plant, Ivan Yotov, head of state-owned power grid operator ESO, said on June 2 2011.

Bringing the nuke plant at Belene into operation will require an investment of 568 million leva for increasing the capacity of the country's power grid, Yotov said on the sidelines of an international nuclear energy forum in Varna.

If the country decides not to proceed with the project, it will need to allocate 505 million leva for building about 1300 km of new transmission lines across the country by 2020.

Bulgaria should close down 2185 MW of energy capacities by 2015, namely coal plants which do not comply with the environmental standards of the European Union.
