On 26 June 2026, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eng. Ivan Pehlivanov – one of the most prominent figures in the history of Bulgaria’s industrial development and, in particular, of the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA).

Born on 26 June 1926 in the village of Voden, Yambol region, Ivan Pehlivanov devoted his entire professional career to the advancement of Bulgarian industry, engineering, and economic management. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Sofia (today’s Technical University of Sofia), he progressed through all levels of professional development – from designer and engineer to head of leading design and production organizations, Deputy Minister of Mechanical Engineering, and chairman of specialized state bodies in the fields of metallurgy and mechanical engineering.

Eng. Ivan Pehlivanov was among the key builders of modern Bulgarian industry in the second half of the twentieth century. Dozens of high-tech production facilities were designed, established and successfully managed with his decisive involvement.

His role in the establishment and development of the Bulgarian Industrial Business Association (BIBA), today the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA), was particularly significant. As one of the founders of the organization in 1980, he became its first Vice President and later led the Association during some of the most dynamic and challenging years of its development (1983–1990).

Under his leadership, BIBA established itself as a respected representative of Bulgarian industry and economic life. His contribution went far beyond administrative management – he laid the foundations of the institutional identity of today’s BIA and worked consistently to secure its recognition both nationally and internationally. It is no coincidence that his name remains closely associated with the Association’s emergence as a respected public institution and a nationally representative employers’ organization.

Eng. Pehlivanov belonged to the generation of Bulgarian engineers and industrial leaders who played an active role in the country’s industrialization during the second half of the twentieth century. Through his expertise, organizational talent and statesmanlike vision, he left a lasting mark on the development of mechanical engineering, industrial design and economic governance. Hundreds of engineers and professionals remember him as a person of exceptional professional standards, broad knowledge and a deep sense of public responsibility.

Until the final years of his life, Ivan Pehlivanov maintained a strong interest in Bulgaria’s economic and social development. Through his memoirs, publications and his book Witness to History, he left valuable testimony about the processes that shaped Bulgarian industry and economic life over several decades.

Today, as we commemorate the centenary of his birth, we pay tribute to one of the architects of the modern Bulgarian Industrial Association – an engineer, public figure and visionary whose legacy continues to live on through the institution he helped establish and strengthen.

We honor the memory of Eng. Ivan Pehlivanov – a man who left a lasting imprint on the history of Bulgarian industry and organized business in Bulgaria.
