Tomorrow, 1 May 2026, the provisional application of the EU-Mercosur interim Trade Agreement will begin, marking a major step forward for Europe’s agenda of competitiveness, resilience, and diversification. BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer said:

“Tomorrow marks a long-awaited milestone for the business community. The provisional application of the interim Trade Agreement will help showcase the value of the EU-Mercosur deal in practice by easing high tariffs, reducing red tape, securing access to critical minerals, and supporting the development of more diversified value chains.

This development opens a new chapter in the relationship between the EU and the Mercosur countries, which have demonstrated their willingness to collaborate and engage in open and rules-based trade with reliable partners at a time of increasing protectionism, geopolitical turmoil, and rising costs.

This momentum should now be maintained. We trust that the provisional application of the interim Trade Agreement will pave the way for the ratification of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement, which remains an economic, strategic, and geopolitical necessity for Europe.”
