Today’s decision approving the EU-Mercosur agreement marks a major milestone in affirming the European Union’s economic competitiveness and strategic autonomy. BusinessEurope hails this development as a significant step forward in the adoption of an agreement that is crucial to advancing the European Union’s diversification agenda.

 BusinessEurope President Fredrik Persson said:

"BusinessEurope welcomes the Council’s approval of the EU-Mercosur agreement. By granting access to a market of 270 million consumers, the deal represents a key instrument for delivering on the European Union’s diversification agenda.

This is all the more important in today’s volatile and unpredictable geoeconomic environment. Diversifying the European Union’s relations is no longer an option, but a necessity. In this context, the EU-Mercosur agreement, as a rules-based partnership with like-minded partners, will make a decisive contribution to the EU’s economic resilience and strategic autonomy.

The Council’s approval is groundbreaking, paving the way for the implementation of a long-awaited agreement that will bring Europe closer to its partners and ease pressure on European companies, enabling savings of up to €4 billion annually. Through increased market access for goods and services, it offers companies, particularly SMEs, much-needed opportunities to enhance their competitiveness in a highly strategic region.

Nevertheless, the process is not yet complete. We therefore call on the Members of the European Parliament to ratify the agreement so that it can swiftly enter into force and open new horizons for the European Union.

Now is the time to finalise the EU-Mercosur agreement, a cornerstone for Europe’s economic and geopolitical future.’’
