Inflation in the European Union remained unchanged in August at 2.4% year-on-year, the same level as in July. In the eurozone, inflation also remained steady at 2%, unchanged from the previous month, which corresponds to the target set by the European Central Bank (ECB). This is according to the latest revised data from Eurostat, the European statistical agency, published today on its official website. The agency slightly revised the figures downward, after initially reporting earlier this month that eurozone inflation was expected to rise to 2.1% last month.

On a monthly basis—August compared to July—inflation in the EU and the eurozone increased by 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively.

For Bulgaria, Eurostat data based on the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) indicate a slight acceleration in the annual growth rate of consumer prices to 3.5% in August, up from 3.4% in July. On a monthly basis, inflation in August was recorded at 0.1%.

The lowest annual inflation in the EU last month was observed in Cyprus, where it remained unchanged at 0.0%, followed by France (0.8%) and Italy (1.6%).

The highest inflation rates were recorded in Romania (8.5%), followed by Estonia (6.2%) and Croatia (4.6%).

Compared to July, annual inflation in August fell in nine member states, remained unchanged in four, and increased in fourteen.

On a monthly basis, the largest price increases for consumers were observed in Portugal (2.1%), Belgium (1.5%), and Luxembourg (1.2%).

In August, Denmark experienced deflation on a monthly basis, according to Eurostat data. Overall prices of goods and services in the country fell by 0.7%, followed by Greece (-0.6%), Lithuania, Finland, and Sweden (-0.3% each), Italy and Latvia (-0.2% each), and Poland and Portugal (-0.1% each).

In August 2025, the services sector contributed most to annual inflation in the eurozone (+1.44 percentage points), followed by food, alcohol, and tobacco prices (+0.62 pp), and non-energy industrial goods (+0.18 pp). Energy products contributed to a reduction in inflation, with a decrease of 0.19 pp.
