The EU will postpone retaliatory tariffs on American goods for six months as the trade agreement with the United States is being implemented, CNBC reported, citing a Commission spokesperson. The EU’s countermeasures were due to take effect on Thursday.

“On July 27, 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on a deal on tariffs and trade. The EU continues to work with the U.S. to finalise a joint statement, as agreed on July 27,” the EC spokesperson said, adding:

“In view of these objectives, the Commission will take the necessary steps to delay for six months the EU countermeasures against the U.S., which were due to enter into force on August 7.”

The EU’s retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. are divided into two parts — one in response to Trump’s base and automotive tariffs, and the other targeting U.S. steel and aluminium duties, CNBC noted.
