Spiros Nomikos, CEO of Solvay Sodi AD and Member of the Board of the Bulgarian Industrial Association, was honored in New York for his leadership in implementing a major environmental program

New York, 20.09.2023. For the second year in a row, a Bulgarian is among the ten business leaders honored as SDG pioneers. The world's most prestigious sustainability awards, backed by the United Nations, give global recognition to leaders who use business as a force for good, set ambitious goals and influence their organisations and society towards sustainable development.

Spiros Nomikos reached the final of the competition after being awarded as a Sustainable Development Goals Pioneer in the national round held by the UN Global Compact Bulgarian Network in June this year. As CEO of Solvay Sodi AD, he is dedicated to leading the agenda to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The company has an ambitious plan to phase out the use of fossil fuels by 2030 and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Mr. Nomikos leads a project on the highly efficient use of alternative fuels from pre-treated non-hazardous waste and motivates Solvay Sodi's team of sustainability superheroes on a daily basis.

Spiros Nomikos is the second Bulgarian entrepreneur to win the prestigious award - in 2022. Dimitar Tsotsorkov, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Asarel-Medet AD and a national pioneer, also took a place among the ten business leaders of sustainable development.

The Global Sustainability Pioneers for 2023 were announced at the UN Global Compact Summit on 19 September. They were selected by a jury of representatives from civil society, academia, the UN Global Compact, the UN Administration and previous winners of the award. This year's nominees come from Brazil, the Netherlands, Israel, the United Kingdom and many others.

"The focus of our work now is to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and ensure that we are working with the most modern and high-tech facilities. The next step is process innovation - our team of sustainability superheroes is constantly looking for new, revolutionary solutions for all aspects of our production," said Spiros Nomikos.

The choice of a representative from Bulgaria once again shows the appreciation of our country's business as an important factor in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This is especially true in times of global crises, when business does not abdicate, but proves by its actions what can be done to bring about change that serves not only shareholders, but society as a whole.
