Bulgaria's population has decreased in the last ten years by more than 844 thousand people to 6.519 million, with women being just over 3.383 million and men just over 3.136 million.

This is shown by the data released by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) from the last population census in our country, conducted from September 7 to October 10, 2021.

The population of the country as of September 7, 2021 is 6,519,789. Females are 3,383,527 (or 51.9% of the total population) and males are 3,136,262 (or 48.1%), with per 1,000 females 927 men.

In the period between the last two censuses, the country's population decreased by as many as 844,781 people, or by 11.5%.

The results of the NSI study show that the average annual rate of decrease per year increased from 0.7 percentage points in the period 2001 - 2011 to 1.2 percentage points in the period 2011 - 2021.

The factors that influence the number of the country's population are the natural movement (births and deaths) and external migration, according to NSI.

The population decrease as a result of negative natural growth is -501 thousand, or 59.3% of the total decrease.
