The Ministry of Environment and Water held the first meeting to discuss the scope and steps for the introduction of a deposit system for packaging in Bulgaria. Deputy Minister Nikolay Sidjimov, experts from the Waste Management and Soil Protection Directorate, experts from the Bulgarian Industrial Association, representatives of branch organizations of individual business stakeholders - producers of soft drinks and brewers, recyclers, retail chains, organizations for recovery of packaging waste (members of BIA) and representatives of the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB) participated in the meeting.
Initial positions were presented, united around the most important elements and parameters of the system, which should be carefully studied and evaluated in view of the national peculiarities for achieving a working model. Emphasis was placed on building on past experience, including past mistakes in other countries, to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the system.
The participants thanked the MOEW in the person of Deputy Minister Sidjimov for the provided transparency and the opportunity for open and constructive dialogue and the holding of regular meetings from now on to ensure progress in introducing a deposit system for packaging in Bulgaria.
In a concrete plan, written opinions, data and materials will be exchanged, which will be used to prepare for the next workshop.
