Renovation in order to achieve energy efficiency of multifamily residential buildings will continue in 2022 through the Bulgarian Recovery and Sustainability Plan with "transformation of the existing model of providing 100 percent grants for homeowners in a sustainable mechanism with the active participation of administration, owners and business". This was announced by the organizers of the working discussion on the topic: "Professional management of residential buildings - the need for renovation for energy efficiency" in a communiqué to BTA.

From next year, the owners are expected to co-finance the renovation with 20 percent, as well as to carry out preparatory activities before applying, for which they have neither technical nor organizational capacity, so the need for professional management by the private sector is growing. There is no access to credit and it is not clear how the owners will be able to provide funds for the co-financing part, the statement said.

Participants in the discussion stressed that energy efficiency should not be seen as a cost, but as an investment with a return on savings that are realized over time. A participant in the renovation who has gone through previous programs, said that an average of 57 percent of savings in the condominium accounts have been realized.

Energy efficiency in the housing sector is becoming more and more a recognized need, and the challenges remain the same: the identified needs amount to 54 000 multifamily buildings and 645 000 single-family buildings and commitments from our country - by 2030 to renovate over 12 000 multifamily and 16 000 single-family buildings.

The discussion, organized by the Bulgarian Facility Management Association (BGFMA) and Association of condominium management companies, was attended by representatives of industry organizations and institutions, including KEO, BAIC, Habitat Bulgaria, EnEffect, Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, AUER and Sofia Municipality.
