Inflation in the euro area accelerated to a 13-year high of 3,4% in September and rose by 3,6% across the European Union, and is expected to continue to accelerate in the coming months, according to European statistics.

Compared to August, the consumer price index (CPI) in the euro area and across the EU rose by 0,5% in September.

Compared to a year earlier, inflation in the euro area accelerated in September to 3,4% from 3,0% in August, while across the European Union - to 3,6% from 3,2% a month earlier, reaching its highest level from the end of 2008.

Rising energy prices, followed by services, non-energy industrial goods and food, alcohol and tobacco, contributed the most to inflation.

The highest year of inflation in September was reported in Estonia and Lithuania (increase of less than 6,4%), followed by Poland (increase of 5,6%), while the lowest inflation was reported in Malta (only 0,7%), followed by Portugal (1,3%) and Greece (1,9%).

According to Eurostat data, the annual consumer inflation in Bulgaria in September by 0,3% compared to the previous month and accelerated on an annual basis to 4,0% from 3,1% in August, confirming the NSI data earlier this week for the harmonized inflation in our country.
