The European Commission has selected a list of 11 new projects to be funded with a total of EUR 120 million from Horizon Europe, the largest European research and innovation programme (2021-2027), to support emergency coronavirus research and its options. This funding is part of a wide range of research and innovation actions to combat the coronavirus. It contributes to the Commission’s overall efforts to prevent, mitigate and respond to the impact of the coronavirus and its variants, in line with the new European Bioprotection Preparedness Plan “HERA Incubator”.
Many of the projects will support clinical trials of new treatments and vaccines and develop large-scale coronavirus cohort research and networks going beyond Europe, thus strengthening links with European initiatives. Other projects will strengthen and expand access to research infrastructures that provide services or are necessary to exchange data, expertise and research resources between researchers to enable studies addressing the coronavirus and its variants. These infrastructures include some operational ones, such as the European COVID-19 Data Platform and the European Life Sciences Research Structures.
