While the coronavirus pandemic has been impacting European daily lives for more than a year, attitudes towards the EU remain positive, according to the latest Standard Eurobarometer conducted in February-March 2021. The image of the EU and trust in the EU have increased and reached their highest levels in more than a decade. European citizens identify health and the economic situation as the two top concerns both at EU and national levels. The survey also indicates an increase in concern about the current state of national economies: 69% of Europeans think that the situation is currently ‘bad' and 61% of Europeans fear that their country's economy will recover from the impact of the pandemic ‘in 2023 or later.

According to Bulgarian citizens, their main concerns are the economic recovery and healthcare system in Bulgaria. Their general attitude towards the European Union has improved over the last year resulting in 53% of “approval”, which is currently higher by 4% than the average European response. Traditionally, Bulgarians’ trust in the European institutions is stronger than their reliance on several key national institutions. Bulgaria is among the three member states which have the most positive image of the EU, alongside Portugal (76%) and Latvia (57%).

Most citizens receive their information about EU policies through television, the internet, social media, and conversations with peers.
