Bulgaria’s Renewable Energy Sector Gains Speed

Solar capacity surges
Bulgaria is experiencing strong growth in large-scale solar development and grid connection upgrades. Installed solar PV capacity has jumped from 1,300 MW in 2021 to over 4,500 MW by Q1 2025, driven by a robust pipeline of utility-scale projects.

Storage takes center stage
With solar booming, battery energy storage is now essential for balancing the grid and ensuring reliability. The RESTORE tender scheme is accelerating deployment, targeting more than 6,000 MWh in co-located and standalone systems. In parallel, Bulgaria recently completed its first renewable energy auction, awarding over 3 GW of generation capacity and 1.176 GW of energy storage — a major step forward.

Wind power in motion
Onshore wind continues to expand, and Bulgaria is actively exploring offshore opportunities in the Black Sea. The BLOW (Black Sea Floating Offshore Wind) pilot is one of the first of its kind in the region, aiming to validate floating turbine technology and unlock future large-scale offshore developments.

Green hydrogen emerging
Bulgaria is positioning itself as a regional hydrogen leader through the H2START project in Stara Zagora. The country is now moving forward with plans to develop production, storage, and transport infrastructure for green hydrogen, supported by national and EU-backed initiatives.

Policy and financing on the rise
To reach its goal of 34% energy from renewables by 2030 and double interconnection capacity to 10 GW, Bulgaria is counting on supportive regulation and targeted financial instruments. Programs such as InvestEU and the National Decarbonization Fund are helping mobilize both public and private capital for clean energy investment.
